Zara Phillips London Olympics 2012

LONDON The queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips added to the family silver Tuesday, helping team Britain to a second-place finish behind Germany in Olympic equestrian eventing. Putting shine on the moment: Her mother, Princess Anne, presented the medal.

Queen Victoria reigns again. We are not used to finding Victoria Pendleton blotchy-faced with matted hair, as she was after she and Jess Varnish were disqualified from the team run on Thursday night. Not used to her apologising for a oversight that cost Good Britain the possibility of an Olympic medal.

This was not what the ‘queen of the track’, the second most shot British sportswoman at London 2012, promised us on the posters.

She is the woman who said she felt ‘numb’ status on top of the stage in China; the ice maiden poised, ready, on the start line cheating on not a sparkle of feelings as London’s 6,000- capacity Velodrome grown with assist on Friday.

Yelena Isinbayeva, the Olympic pole vault champion in Athens and Beijing, says a third gold medal in London would be even more special than her previous triumphs because of the dark times she has experienced in recent years.

Serena Williams London Olympics 2012

Serena Williams won the first Olympic singles title of her career and then danced on Centre Court in celebration at completing a career 'golden slam'.

That feat comprises having won every individual singles Slam title - in Melbourne, Paris, London and New York - as well as Olympic singles gold. Williams obliterated Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 to get her hands on the medal, registering her most emphatic win over the Russian in the process.

London Olympics 2012 Stadium

The Olympic Stadium will host the four spectacular Opening and Closing Ceremonies at London 2012, as well as some of the most iconic Games events.

The Stadium is at the heart of the Olympic Park on an ‘island’ site, surrounded by waterways on three sides. Spectators will reach the venue via five bridges that link the site to the surrounding area.
